TRUE STORY

Did you know that it is possible for a dog to love an animal of another species? It's true.

We had a Lizard once. His name was "Squeak". He was a chameleon. He was a large and very tame, and unusually sociable boy (chameleons are typically loners and grouchy). He was larger than the usual 14 inches they grow to. He was old when I got my spoiled rott Mason, but that did not stop 3 month-old Mason from falling in love with the old coot. Mason used to carry Squeak around on his shoulders, and that dog came closer to smiling than I have ever seen a Rottie do, and rotties smile a quite a bit. When Mason was six months old, Squeak died (of old age thankfully). Mason actually grieved with me. True Story. Go figure. Two saps grieving over a lizard.

We now have a new 'meleon. It is a she, and we named her Squeak Two (so much for being creative). Mason loves this one too, but I don't have the guts to try to see if she would like the idea of this big ole rott carrying her around, so Mason has to be content with watching her in her cage. He does this a lot. Mostly he whines at me to let her out, but I remain adamant. I still wonder if he thinks it is the "other" Squeak.

Rottweiler my foot. Someone forgot to tell Mason he is supposed to be tough, not a "Ferdinand the Bull" with flowers and lizards in his hair. Humph...
