WHY RESCUE?

Every day - thousands of pure bred and mixed bred dogs die in shelters. This is a sad fact. However, there is a very small hopeful light at the end of the tunnel in the guise of the Breed Rescuer. Most dog/breed rescue organizations are non-profit organizations. These breed rescuers save dogs from euthanasia at dog pounds, animal shelters and owner give-ups (owners call rescue and give up their dog) and take them into their home in hopes of giving them a second chance at life. Contrary to popular belief, most dogs in rescue are NOT there because they were abused or unmanageable. The reasons why rescuers receive dogs are varied - but some of the reasons given go along these lines:

  • Dog became too big
  • Dog chewed too much
  • Owners moving
  • Owners can no longer afford dog
  • Owners having a baby
  • Allergies mysteriously developed
  • Dog running loose (at large)
  • and sometimes we even hear: "Got white carpet and black dog hair stands out too much"

Occasionally a rescue league may receive a dog that has been removed from his owners due to reasons of neglect - but realistically this is not often. When a dog has been abused or neglected many rescue leagues will hold on to this dog to make sure he is capable of being rehabilitated. If the dog cannot be rehabilitated he sadly cannot be placed.

Many rescue leagues temperament test their dogs and keep them under close observation for a period of time before they are considered for adoption. It is in the league's best interest to make sure the dog being placed is sound and can fit in society.

The Benefits of Adopting a rescue dog:

Most are housebroken already
These dogs are usually past the chewing and destructive phase
They are already full grown or young adults - requiring less supervision
The personality of the dog can be already seen and evaluated
You are saving a life that may ot have had a chance without you
WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS?

Breed rescue leagues try to keep dogs as long as possible. Some leagues keep dogs rescued for as long as they live. Some - unfortunately - are not able to do so and if a dog is not adoptable it will have to be put down. This is the hardest and most heartbreaking aspect of rescue. Although it is gratifying to be able to place a dog in a home that will appreciate him and love him as he deserves - there are many times when a rescuer must face this most hurtful aspect of rescuing.

Please remember that all breed rescuers do this from money out of their own pockets. Any funding comes from gentle people such as yourself. Without donations - there would be no rescue leagues.

Rescue a dog today - save his life and allow him to do the only thing he ever wanted ...to love someone always....
